Grand Union - Past and Present

Glenmont, NY store
This list of former Grand Union locations was on Wikipedia, but it had to be removed, so I put it here where it would be better.  Not a complete list due to the nature of the business.

Locations

New York

Now Tops:

Corinth, Warrensburg*, Bolton Landing, Elizabethtown, Peru*, North Creek, Au Sable Forks, Schroon Lake, Northville, Chestertown, Greenville (ex-Bryant's), Hancock, Stamford, Hoosick Falls, West Coxsackie, Tannersville and two in Saranac Lake* (all small towns).

Other former GU stores:

Albany (NY 5/Central Ave ACROSS from Westgate) - later was a Toys for Joy, now is a Hannaford

Albany (NY 5/Central Ave IN Westgate) - A former Albany Public turned Scot's Lo Cost (Same company)- turned into GU when merged then torn down during renovations a few years back - sat in the "corner" of the plaza.  Now has Price Chopper International.

Albany (NY 5/Central Ave just ABOVE Westgate same side) - This was a former Caldor/Price Chopper plaza - the Caldor was torn down and a MEGA SAVE store was built (identical to the one in Poughkeepsie that never opened) - this was open 6 MONTHS then closed during bankruptcy. 2. Another former location of Grand Union is Cobleskill, NY (now a Price Chopper since 1990 or 1991. ) Many of these lists neglect to mention it, and I'm wondering if it's because it became a Price Chopper in the early 1990s.

  3. I forgot to add Pine Plains,NY. This is a Pecks Market and has been for quite some time. I have family that worked for GU for decades. I will get more info when i have time as we need to fill in many voids in the list!!!

  4. A couple other notes:

    - The Greenville (NY) store has always been Bryant's Country Square (and is still signed as such) - they simply changed to being supplied by C&S - even their ad flier looks just like the GU Markets ones, but with the Bryant's logo.

    - Hopewell Junction NY (if it's where I am thinking of) is now split between CVS and a Farm store)

    - Waterford NY is split into several stores, including one of the largest Stewart's (convenience stores) and a couple other smaller storefronts.

    - Matawan NJ - there is a Stop & Shop in that plaza - I am unsure if they operated in the GU spot for a time before building the new store (as they did in Rhinebeck NY) or not.

    - There was also a vacant GU in Matamoras PA (just a few miles from Milford) - it looked like there was work going on in July, but no info as to what it might be headed toward.

  5. That Hopewell Junction, NY info is correct. Also, the Grand Union in Warwick, NY is now a CVS I believe. And there was a Grand Union in Greenwood Lake. Not sure what that is now!!

    1. Technically, that store is a Shop 'n Save.

While they once used that name for all their stores in the area, after most switched to Hannaford the Shop 'n Save name was reserved for stores that are supplied by Hannaford, but owned by independent owners.

There may be others still out there, but a couple that were eventually got bought by Hannaford (probably owners wanted to retire) and are now labelled with the corporate name.

  11. Plattsburgh, NY had at least 3 other locations not mentioned. The first one was at the Plattsburgh Plaza on Rt. 3(Cornelia St.). This is the one that moved to the Commerce Square location that became a TJ Maxx. There was one downtown at corner of Margaret and Cornelia, it is now offices. Also, there was the one at Skyway Plaza (outside the Plattsburgh AFB gates) on Rt. 9. Tis location was a tops for several years and is now a Yando's Big M Supermarket.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The one in the Plattsburgh Plaza is now a Big Lots and Family Dollar. Keeseville's was a Macs but they closed because the roof is shot, it's vacant. There was one in Willsboro that was closed when Tops left and reopened as a Country IGA but failed possibly due to poor management. it's also vacant. If there was one in Jay it's unrecognisable now and was closed for many years. There was once one in Westport NY but it's now called Everybody's Supermarket.

      Delete
    2. Could the one in Jay actually be the Ausable Forks location?

      Delete
  12. I'm not familiar with Plattsburgh, but the stores I have as of 8/2/2000 are...

    #1996 63 Consumer Drive
    #2403 14 Skyway Shopping Center

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Consumer "Drive" is actually called Consumer Square. That location is now split between a Petsmart and TJ Maxx. It replaced an older store located down the road in Plattsburgh Plaza, which is now split between a Big Lots and a Family Dollar. There was also a Grand Way store in Plattsburgh Plaza at one point in time. That building later housed an Aldi, and is now a Save A Lot.

The GU at Skyway Shopping Center was converted to a Hot Dot Foods in the late 90s. After the bankruptcy it became (and still is) Yando's Big M. That store primarily served the south end of the city and the former Air Force base.

There was another smaller location downtown on Margaret St. that closed sometime in the 80s. The building was remodeled for office space and doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to a supermarket now.

  13. Worked for "Grand Union" back in the early '90's.
One of the most petty operations in business , at the time, among a myriad of insults suffered. I had to deal with Assistant Mrgs. being encouraged to punch my time card out early to save a few pennies---no matter that as they were doing so they knew full well that, meanwhile I continued slaving away, somewhere in the store, whether it be, mopping floors, making bales , or wiping feces off toilets Merciless.
Their fond farewell to this reliable, tireless, dedicated employee- included withholding; stealing, actually,(in cahoots with the Union goons in Jersey) my well earned 1 week vacation paycheck which if I recall correctly amounted to the staggering sum of approx 140 bucks
I later discovered that someone had ,clandestinely, taken my name off the payroll for a short period during an well-anticipated, authorized leave-so that my employment tenure would not meet the min req- 1 yr + a cross over of a month of March period Upon my much welcomed return the Food workers Union "double-dipped" for weekly dues to cover the entire length of my absence

  15. Some stores were under significant pressure in the early 90s. I worked in a small store and the manager was constantly tweaking the schedule to stay within payroll caps from the district manager. Anyone not a regular cashier had to juggle several responsibilites. Worst part of the job was scraping off price stickers for price changes before the scanner era.

    1. Oh, how I remember doing 3 jobs at once in the Four Corners Vestal location. Also, the Endwell store wasn't demolished, they renovated the inside. The original building is still there.

      Delete
    2. And the best part of the price stickers (for the customers) was finding the items where they hadn't been removed.

We had one store here (Schodack, outside Albany NY) from 1977 that stayed open until the bankruptcy and NEVER got scanners!

Once the card came into effect for sales, they'd put a tag on the item with the regular price then at the top a -$x.xx for the discount (which the cashier would punch in both).

Sometimes, as a customer you could get better deals by finding a sale tag from a prior week that wasn't removed, say to combine with a manufacturer coupon that had come out that current week so you got the best net price.

  16. I would like to clarify a few location updates in Queens, NY.

    1. Bay Terrace Center in Bayside Queens- Grand Union until early 1990's in shopping center. Closed and Barnes & Noble moved in as Waldbaums moved into site at center where former bowling alley was located.

The entire center was remodeled and bears no resemblence of the old Grand Union.

    2. Flushing- Main Street and Union Turnpike, is now a Key Food

    3. College Point, My last visit to that neighborhood and I discovered a CVS Pharmacy where the former GU was located.

  17. South Florida:

    Former Grand Union locations

Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors: Former GU was later a Piggly Wiggly in the late 1980's and now a portion of the store is a gym. The entire Wilton Manor's shopping center was redeveloped and caters to the local Gay and Lesbian community. The only reminder of the old Grand Union can be found in the area of the gym in the original building's angled window shape.

Fort Lauderdale, Broward Blvd: shared shopping center with a Zayre discount store. Was a Shoppers Food Warehouse (under GU) when it closed in the mid 1980's. Entire center demolished to make current park and ride lot at I-95/Broward Blvd/Amtrak/Tri-Rail stations

Lauderhill Florida, another freestanding store off Oakland Park Blvd near a hospital, sat vacant for years then converted into medical offices.

POMPANO BEACH: Sample Road, This store was closed for many years after GU left Florida, was later a used book store, closed again for a decade and was most recently a Save-A-Lot store.

    BOCA RATON (3) locations
    1. Sandlefoot Cove was later a Publix, is possibly closed today

    2. Palmetto Park Road- Original 1970's Grand Union was demolished and Publix rebuit on site

    3. Spanish River Blvd & US1- Federal Hwy also an original 1970's Grand Union that was demolished and Publix rebuilt on site.

BOYNTON BEACH: 1970's Grand Union shared shopping center with KMart. Stood vacant for years then when KMart closed, Winn Dixie moved into the old KMart. It too has since closed.

North Palm Beach, neighborhood freestanding Grand Union was a local supermarket in the early 1990's then later abandoned.

Brick, NJ - Now a Stop & Shop

  19. Just adding another location not mentioned, the Grand Union on Passaic St. in Wood-Ridge, NJ. I think it closed only a year before the chain folded, or maybe right after the nearby Carlstadt store opened. The site is now a literal a hole in the ground, and will probably be unless Wesmont gets built.

  20. I can add a few NH stores to your list

West Lebanon (Glen Road) - Now a price chopper.

Claremont (Pleasant Street) - Closed 1984. Became a Carl's Drug in 1986, then a Fay's Drug in 1988, Closed as a Fay's in 1997 (after the merger with JCPenney), now the space has been divided up into several retail stores. It is rumored to believe that much of the old interior has been retained thru all the remodels, abiet it can only be seen from the stock areas. (I saw this as a Fay's employee in the 1990s)

Claremont (Washington Street) - Closed in 1993, due to Market Basket taking over the old Kmart space and purchasing the entire mall from KMC Realty. Also it should be noted about that time Claremont recieved NH's second WalMart, and since that store's opening in 1980, Claremont had seen 4 different supermarkets open. (Hannaford, IGA/FarmFare, WalMart, and Market Basket). The space is now occupied by a movie theatre.

  29. I lived in the Hanover/Lebanon/White river Junction area from 1990 to 2001. I was a frequent Grand Union customer.

The Hanover, NH store was on South Main Street, 2 blocks south of the Dartmouth Green and was briefly a P&C. The building was torn down or maybe just gutted and the site now houses a CVS. Some oldtimers still refer to the "Grand Union parking lot," which is the closest free parking to campus.

I don't remember a Grand Union on Glen Road in West Lebanon: there was one in the "Miracle Mile Plaza" on Mechanic Street, which became a P&C, and later a Price Chopper.

The White River Junction Grand Union became a P&C and the building now houses a branch of the Hanover Consumer Co-op. (This is an entirely separate coop from the Upper Valley Coop which is two blocks away.)

There was also a Grand Union 20 miles upriver from White River Junction in Bradford, VT which I frequented for 3 years when I lived nearby in Orford, NH. It also became a P&C.

Most, perhaps all, of those locations were P&C's up until some point in the 1980s: the shopping carts, etc. still had P&C logos on them well into the 1990s.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Claremont, NH...There was another location on Maple Avenue...a large building housed both a Grand Union on the right and an Ames on the left. Grand Union went first; then later the Ames store closed. The building was purchased by Amsource and used as a water-bottling facility briefly before falling vacant for a period. Subsequently, the building was demolished by the city and the site is owned by a church intending to build on the site. The parking lot remains.

A local businessman tried to run it as an IGA but that has since closed, the building sits vacant. The Keeseville location's story was that it went from GU to Tops, when Tops left the first time Mac's Market took over. They left because the roof was beyond repair. This building also sits empty. Everybody's Market in Westport, NY was once a Grand Union, it closed sometime in the 70s.

Port Henry, NY originally had a small GU store on Broad Street. The building was razed several decades ago, but the old (and very small) parking lot is still there. It was replaced by a bigger building just around the corner on South Main Street in the 50s. There were extensive renovations done and an addition built on in the mid 70s. The store became a Tops in 2001 after the bankruptcy, but closed in 2006 when Tops left the area. Port Henry was one of several former North Country GU/Tops locations that did NOT become a GU Family Market. There was talk about it becoming a Save A Lot, but ultimately the building sat empty for a year, and Rutland, Vermont-based Mac's Market (who still occupy the space to this day) bought the building and re-opened the store in 2007.

It opened in the mid-70s as a super store to replace the tiny little store in Pearl River NY. Problems with the EPA kept it from opening for 3 years, after the Pearl River store had closed. They lost their customer base, and now Shop Rite is the only grocery store in town. The 137 Kinderkamack Rd Montvale store is still half empty as of 2019; half is a surgical center. I remember going (as a kid, so late 1980's or early 1990's probably) to a food show event in Albany (NY) that GU sponsored. They gave away gift certificates as door prizes, and someone had come from MA and won one.

The announcer was kidding with the winner about that, that he would have to stop by a store on the way home to use it, since there were none over there in MA.

Not quite sure why that occurred, as they still had stores in VT and CT until the bankruptcy (and even after under the wholesaler in scattered spots), but not in MA which is between those two (particularly the towns you mention like Pittsfield and Williamstown, which is not far distance wise from Bennington, VT).

  89. Wow what a treat.I worked for GU in the 60 s in many stores. The Sunrise supermarket stores were bought by GU in that period. All the stores in Levittown (Sunrise) were converted to GU!
I worked in many of them but my BEST YEARS were at the Manhasset. Sunrise at 1900 Northern Blvd in the Americana Center.
B.Altman was right next to us. Our customers were From Strathmore, Munsey Park, Port Washington So nice to deal with, always a kind word, how are you etc. NEVER complained. We had many CEO,s.....owners of major food products that we sold. Best time of year...a snowy winter day, roads closed. The people would come down on SLEDS..kids on back, too early before the store opened. The milk and bread trucks used to leave the goods on our sidewalk.NEVER A THOUGHT OF THEFT!!!
When I came in I would find milk and bread items taken out and the MONEY on top, some with a nice note.Have a nice day Tom, from Mrs.Jones. What a beautiful experience.
    Miss them all! Tom Curtin

  90. Missing a location in Saint Johnsbury, VT on the list. Later became a Shop & Save, now home to a Napa Auto Parts, Salvation Army, and a Domino’s Pizza

    1. Oh, and Berlin, VT (on Barre-Montpelier Road). Has been a Big Lots since but the whole shopping plaza received major flood damage back in July, so I don’t know if it will ever reopen
