7-Eleven has just arrived in the Syracuse after the year-long wait from buying former Tops division Wilson Farms/Sugarcreek Stores, yet they're still not as common as in Rochester (I last went to one there and DC after that last year).  There are still plenty of locations for the C-store king.  Many of them can have gas which few of them do here right now.  Here's where they should go:

Tops Gas coming to North Syracuse

Just hope prices don't get this high again!

As the mainstream media are slow to cover this, it's a perfect opportunity for me!  Tops Friendly Markets will open their third gas station in Onondaga County and fourth in CNY (including their first in Auburn in Cayuga County) at their North Syracuse location, previously P&C from 1994-2010 and Channel Home Store for decades before that.  It's being built near the entrance on Brewerton Road (US 11).  Later this year is the best I can give as to when the grand opening will be.  There could be one in Skaneateles if the former fire house next door is torn down, though people there might not want that and they can go down US 20 anyway.  The Camillus one is near a competitor, Hess, so that may not work either.  Down W Genesee St to Westvale, the former Name Brand Deals and Genesee Theatre (which should have stayed put in the first place) could be destroyed for a station.  Maybe one could even be built at the upcoming Valley Plaza store (another ex-P&C).  If Tops take back their Oswego store, Tops Gas could go there too.  Across the street at the Fayetteville branch.  Even in Cortlandville (which has always been a Tops) or Rome.  Watch this space!

Lidl: From Germany with Love

Move over Aldi!  There are a new German import said to be coming to the US.  Lidl have competed with Aldi North and South in Europe for the past four decades and may now do the same in this country.  Grocery Headquarters had an article about it a few years ago but nothing else has been heard of it since.  While Aldi have gone outside the EU, Lidl currently are exclusive to Europe.  There are several other chains similar to both that are limited-assortment supermarkets like PriceRite or Save-a-Lot in the States already, plus Food Basics and Loblaws No Frills in Canada, where Lidl are also said to be considering opening stores.
I can think of places in this state and beyond where Lidl could go, whether a small town where an indie vacated, elsewhere Upstate in Albany or or downstate in former ShopRite and Caldor locations.
Like Aldi, Lidl cater to urban neighbourhoods as well as the suburbs.  They largely stock house brands as well as a few national brands.  They don't have the lofty services the big boxes provide and limit advertising keeping prices down.  From Ireland to the former Iron Curtain, Lidl may be ready to cross the pond.  More as this develops (I had asked Lidl UK about this but have never heard back).

Syracuse fye to close

Since the paper haven't caught up with this, then I'll do it myself. Also needed to put something new here. fye in Carousel Center will be closing Friday. Great Northern Mall in Clay and Sangertown Square in New Hartford will be the closest locations but it may not be convenient for everyone. I heard fye could return when Destiny USA is complete but its third-hand gossip and speculation at this time. The economy and internet has caused the Albany-based chain to shutter stores, including their own area.

Best Yet is one of the oldest private labels in the US celebrating over 120 years! It is either seen in indie stores or small chains affiliated with C&S Wholesale Grocers.  If you know any more, even out of state, do let me know.  It has replaced Shurfine/Western Family in many mom and pops since their sale to Topco several years ago.  Site now has complete list.  This is just a selection started before they had their own.
